Monti is central Rome‘s neighbourhoods. It’s a short walk from the gay district, Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, the Quirinal hill, the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica, but usually the tourists tend to ignore one of the city’s most charming old residential neighbourhoods.
In ancient times, it was the heart of Rome’s red light district. These days, it couldn’t be more different, together with Trastevere, quarter of the city… it is an areas for alternative fashion and local street food.
There are several cafes that surround the area’s central hub, Piazza della Madonna dei Monti with a beautiful fountain (16th century), the main attraction in the area! take the opportunity to order a coffee or glass of wine at one of the nearby bars and then, sit on the fountain’s steps.
During the day, locals take breaks from work to eat lunch here. After sunset, you are going to find the young Romans drinking cocktails and smoking cigarettes.
In Monti, it’s common to walk down a street and find yourself buying clothes from a vintage store. The weekend market located on via Leonina features the work of young designers, craftspeople, artists and innovators and they offer a variety of vintage clothes and jewelry.
